Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
(EMDR)
Process traumatic or distressing memories safely and reduce their emotional impact, helping you move forward with calm and confidence.
What EMDR Is
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process distressing or traumatic experiences that continue to affect them in the present.
When we experience trauma, memories can sometimes become “stuck,” leaving us with ongoing feelings of fear, shame, or distress even when the danger has passed.
EMDR helps the brain to reprocess these memories so they become less intense and easier to live with.
During sessions, your therapist will guide you through recalling aspects of a difficult experience while using bilateral stimulation — such as gentle eye movements, sounds, or taps — to help the brain process the memory safely.
Over time, this allows the memory to feel more distant, less triggering, and more integrated into your overall life story.
At Shire Therapies, our EMDR-trained therapists create a calm, supportive space to work through trauma at a pace that feels safe and manageable. You won’t be asked to share more than you’re comfortable with — the focus is always on stability, safety, and healing.
“You can’t change what happened, but you can change how it lives within you.”
